What Cooling Actually Costs Here in 2026
Vancouver used to be the city where you survived July with a fan. The 2021 heat dome ended that assumption, and every summer since has pushed more homeowners into the cooling market at the same time. The honest summary of that market: homes with ductwork usually land in the central AC row, homes without ducts land in the ductless rows, and homes whose furnace is also aging belong in the heat pump conversation, because one machine doing both jobs, with combined CleanBC, BC Hydro, FortisBC and municipal rebates reaching $16,000, can beat two separate purchases on net cost. The equipment decision is covered in our ductless versus central AC comparison, and the full service picture sits on our cooling and AC service page.
Two things this guide is not. It is not a sizing guide, because every system we quote is sized with an ACCA Manual J calculation for the actual house, most 1,500-to-2,000-square-foot Vancouver homes landing between 1.5 and 2.5 tons of cooling, never guessed from square footage. And it is not a brochure, because the rows below include the add-ons and hidden costs that decide whether a $6,000 quote becomes a $7,400 invoice. For the deep background on equipment types and why we all need AC now, see our complete AC installation guide.

The Full 2026 AC Installation Price Table
These are the lines we invoice from, matching the published rates on our cooling and heat pump service pages. Every price is CAD before tax, flat-rate and written, and the rows are a decision map: your ducts, your panel and your rebate eligibility pick the row.
| System type | 2026 installed cost | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Central AC, existing ductwork | $4,500 - $8,500 | Condenser, coil, electrical disconnect, pad, startup and commissioning |
| Central AC, full system with new ducts | $8,500 - $14,000 | Condenser, coil, ductwork modifications and electrical |
| Heat pump conversion (CleanBC-eligible) | $6,500 - $16,000 | Ducted cold-climate from $6,500-$14,000; multi-zone ductless to $16,000; heating and cooling in one system |
| Ductless mini-split heat pump, single zone | $4,500 - $8,500 | Indoor and outdoor unit, line set, electrical, demo and commissioning |
| Ductless mini-split AC, single zone | $3,200 - $5,800 | Cooling-only indoor and outdoor units, line set, electrical, demo |
| Ductless multi-zone (2-4 zones) | $7,500 - $14,000 | One outdoor unit, multiple indoor heads, line sets and controls |
| AC diagnostic service call | $89 - $129 | Up to one hour of diagnosis and a quote, waived with repair |
| AC tune-up / annual maintenance | $149 - $229 | Coil clean, refrigerant check, electrical, performance test |
| AC repair (capacitor, coil, fan motor) | $245 - $695 | Labour plus common parts, same visit in most cases |
| Emergency call-out, after hours | flat premium, disclosed first | Nights, weekends and holidays; no overtime multiplier on the repair |
Read the table top down as the ownership ladder: the install rows are the purchase, the middle rows are what keeps it alive, and every row is flat and in writing before work starts. Where the furnace overlaps this conversation, our furnace cost guide prices the heating side of the same mechanical room.
Central AC, Heat Pump or Ductless: Who Each One Is For
Central AC, if you have sound ductwork
At $4,500 to $8,500 on existing ductwork, central air is the cleanest install for homes whose furnaces already own a distribution network. The condenser sits on a pad outside, the coil rides the ductwork, and the install is a single day for most Metro Vancouver homes, four to six hours on a straightforward swap with existing pad and electrical. The honest caveat is the ductwork itself: pre-1970 ducts sized for simpler furnaces sometimes need balancing or sealing before they can carry cooling quietly, and the full-system row, $8,500 to $14,000 with ductwork modifications, is what that work looks like when it is real.
Heat pump conversion, if the furnace is aging too
A ducted cold-climate heat pump, $6,500 to $14,000 installed, replaces both the furnace and the air conditioner in one system, and it is the row the rebate stack is aimed at: combined CleanBC, BC Hydro, FortisBC and municipal support can reach $16,000 on eligible cold-climate installs. The overlap between the top of the AC range and the bottom of the heat pump range is exactly where this decision lives, and when rebates pull the heat pump's net cost below the AC's gross cost, the comparison stops being about green courage and becomes arithmetic. The physics and the house-by-house fit are covered in our heat pump service page.
Ductless, if there are no ducts
For homes without ductwork, condos, additions, character houses, laneway homes and the one room the main system never reached, ductless is the answer. A single-zone mini-split heat pump installs for $4,500 to $8,500 in about a day, and multi-zone systems, one outdoor unit feeding two to four indoor heads, run $7,500 to $14,000 for cooling-only configurations and $9,500 to $16,000 for heat pump versions. Each zone gets its own control, which is a comfort upgrade no single thermostat matches, and the inverter units are quiet enough for bedrooms. Cooling-only single-zone units start lower, $3,200 to $5,800, for homes that only want July solved.

CleanBC Rebates, Line by Line
Through the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program, homeowners replacing an AC or a fossil-fuel furnace with an eligible heat pump can receive up to $16,000 in combined support: a $9,400 base rebate for replacing a fossil-fuel system, a $5,000 income-tested top-up for households under the program threshold, and municipal top-ups from participating municipalities, with BC Hydro and FortisBC layers stacking where eligible. The exact stack depends on your fuel type, utility, income testing and municipality, which is why the honest phrase is "up to", and the full program detail lives in our CleanBC rebates guide.
Two practical notes. First, plain central AC does not qualify: the rebates are aimed at heat pump conversions, which is another reason the overlapping price bands deserve a hard look. Second, the paperwork has teeth: pre and post energy assessments, a documented permitted install and correct filing, all of which we handle at no charge, with most rebate cheques arriving eight to twelve weeks after the post-installation assessment.
Sizing, the Heat Dome and Install Timing
During the 2021 heat dome, undersized and aging ACs failed across the region while properly sized systems held the line, and that summer is why we size every system with an ACCA Manual J calculation, factoring square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, sun exposure, occupants and local climate, with a buffer for extreme-weather events. Most 1,500-to-2,000-square-foot Vancouver homes need 1.5 to 2.5 tons, and the two failure modes of guessing are both expensive: undersized systems fail in heat waves, and oversized ones short-cycle, dehumidify poorly and cost more than the house needed.
On timing: the honest calendar advice is to book cooling work in spring, March and April, because the rush begins with the first 28-degree forecast and heat-dome weeks put maintenance-plan customers first in the emergency queue. A standard central AC swap takes four to six hours, a new install with a fresh circuit is a full day, ductless single zones run six to eight hours, and multi-zone systems take one to two days, all with floors protected and the system demonstrated before the crew leaves. Choosing who gets the job is its own checklist, covered in our HVAC contractor guide.
What Ownership Costs After Install Day
The recurring lines are modest: an annual tune-up at $149 to $229, ideally in May or June before the season, keeps the manufacturer warranty valid, catches refrigerant leaks early and cleans condenser coils, which can cut efficiency by 20 percent when dirty. Repairs, when they come, run $245 to $695 for the common capacitor, coil and fan motor work, a refrigerant recharge with leak check runs $245 to $495, and every service call starts with an $89 to $129 diagnostic that is waived with any repair. During heat waves, maintenance-plan customers get priority emergency dispatch, average arrival 25 minutes across Metro Vancouver for true no-cooling calls, which is the quietest advantage on this page and the standing promise behind our Vancouver AC repair crews.
